May 26, 2011 - Old Fort Military Cemetery Re-Dedication

Fort Myers, Fl (May 26, 2011) - The City of Fort Myers and the Southwest Florida Historical Society are holding a reception open to the public to re-dedicate the Old Fort Myers Military Cemetery at the intersection of Fowler Street and Second Street. The re-dedication will begin at 10:00 am.

The re-dedication will be performed by Mayor Randall Henderson, Jr, City of Fort Myers, and Gerri Reaves, President, Southwest Florida Historical Society. Immediately following the dedication, light refreshments will be provided on the porch of the historic Langford Kingston Home at the intersection of Fowler Street and First Street

This location of Fowler Street served as the cemetery for military soldiers and those living in the Old Fort assisting in the Seminole Indian War effort from the 1840’s until the 1860’s. Upon the creation of Fowler Street, it was believed that the existing graves were all relocated, however, during the 1993 expansion, crews discovered many more remains and artifacts. It was during this time that a previously installed marker was temporarily removed during construction and excavation for safekeeping, but for nearly 20 years it had not been re-installed. The marker is now re-installed to honor those first citizens who were responsible for Fort Myers’ deep and rich history. The City of Fort Myers treasures its historic significance and all who made the City, County, and Region become what it is today.

Please consider joining us this special re-dedication. Parking is available at the historic Langford Kingston Home, 2500 First Street.
